PDP Rejects Wike’s Call for Support for Tinubu
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected a call attributed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for opposition candidates to collapse their structures and support the re-election of President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary of the Interim National Working Committee, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the PDP said the position did not represent the views of its “true and principled” members.
The party described those supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government while presenting themselves as opposition figures as “pretenders” working for the governing party.
According to the PDP, the primary responsibility of an opposition party is to provide an alternative to the government in power rather than support its policies.
“The paramount duty of the opposition is to provide an alternative to the incumbent, not to massage their ego,” the party said.
The PDP also rejected the idea of opposition parties forming an alliance with the governing APC, saying any alliance should be among opposition parties.
The party described the political arrangement known as the “rainbow coalition” as a threat to electoral democracy and warned against what it called an attempt to turn Nigeria into an “electoral monarchy.”
The party urged its members to remain committed while awaiting the judgment of the Court of Appeal on its internal dispute.
The PDP said its case before the appellate court had been heard and expressed hope that the judiciary would return the party to what it described as its “true owners.”
The opposition party also warned Nigerians against what it called “elite accommodation and state capture masquerading as broad-based political collaboration.”
It urged Nigerians to use the next election as an opportunity to vote out what it described as insensitive and irresponsible political actors.
