Lagos Intensifies Waste Management Reforms Ahead of Monthly Sanitation Exercise
The Lagos State Government has intensified efforts to improve waste management operations across the state ahead of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise scheduled for Saturday, August 29, 2026.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this while highlighting the government’s engagement with the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWAMN) and Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators to address challenges affecting waste collection and disposal.
Wahab said the state was committed to building a waste management system that is “efficient, sustainable and accountable,” noting that government was strengthening the regulation of PSP operators while collaborating with waste managers to resolve operational challenges.
According to him, the challenges include access to dumpsites, poor access roads, drainage issues, operational platforms and delays in waste disposal turnaround time.
He said ongoing improvements at the Solous 3 dumpsite in Igando would help reduce pressure on other disposal sites and improve waste collection efficiency in several communities, particularly in the Alimosho axis.
The commissioner also disclosed that the government was reviewing the financial sustainability of PSP operations, stressing that any adjustment must be accompanied by transparency, accountability and improved service delivery.
“Operational challenges cannot be an excuse for failing residents,” Wahab said.
He maintained that every PSP operator must fulfil its contractual obligations, maintain its fleet and provide consistent waste collection services.
Wahab further called for stronger community-level monitoring and enforcement to ensure residents patronise designated waste operators and stop indiscriminate waste disposal.
He stressed that achieving a cleaner and healthier Lagos requires the collective responsibility of government, waste managers and residents.
