LASTMA Impounds 84 Vehicles in Lagos One-Way, Illegal Garage Crackdown
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has impounded 84 commercial and private vehicles during a weekend enforcement operation targeting one-way driving, illegal parking and unauthorised garages across parts of the state.
The enforcement operation was carried out in Idumota, Iddo, Ijora-Olopa, Costain and Onipanu as part of efforts to restore order and improve traffic flow on major roads.
According to LASTMA, particular attention was paid to the practice of commercial buses reversing against traffic along the one-way stretch from Iddo towards Idumota through Cater Bridge.
The agency said the practice poses serious danger to motorists, commuters and pedestrians because vehicles approaching the bridge may not have sufficient warning of buses unlawfully reversing against the flow of traffic.
LASTMA also disclosed that some of its personnel were attacked and injured during the operation by individuals who resisted the enforcement exercise.
The agency said some suspected miscreants allegedly involved in attacking officers and damaging LASTMA operational vehicles were apprehended.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the enforcement as necessary to address persistent traffic violations and restore discipline along critical traffic corridors.
Bakare-Oki also warned commercial bus operators, motorists and other road users against using under-bridge spaces, road setbacks and other unauthorised locations as garages or loading points.
He said the agency would continue to enforce traffic regulations against one-way driving, dangerous reversing, illegal parking, indiscriminate loading and the use of unauthorised garages.
LASTMA urged transport operators, motorists and other road users to comply with Lagos traffic laws, warning that further violations would attract appropriate enforcement measures.
