Jang at 80: Former Plateau Governor Says Autobiography Sets The Record Straight

Former Plateau State Governor, Senator (Dr.) Jonah David Jang, has described his autobiography as a testimony to God’s faithfulness and an honest account of his life’s journey, saying it was written to preserve his experiences for future generations and correct misconceptions about his public service.

Jang spoke on Saturday during the presentation of his autobiography as part of activities marking his 80th birthday celebration at the Tamarald Event Centre along Old Airport Road, Jos.

The former governor expressed gratitude to God for preserving his life and thanked the Plateau State Government, led by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, Vice President Kashim Shettima, family members, friends and other dignitaries who attended the event.

He said although writing an autobiography was never part of his plans, his son, Yakubu, persistently encouraged him to document his experiences for posterity.

“Many people have asked me why I decided to write this book. To be honest, writing an autobiography was never my intention. I was content to leave my life story to history and to those who know me. However, my son, Yakubu, persistently encouraged me not to allow important aspects of my life’s journey to be lost.”

Jang explained that the book was not intended to attack anyone but to provide an accurate account of events from his perspective.

“Another important reason for writing this autobiography is that, over the years, many assumptions have been made about me, my decisions, and my actions. Some have been based on incomplete information, while others have unfortunately created misconceptions and controversies that continue even while I am still alive.”

He also reflected on the lessons he had learned over eight decades, emphasizing that faith and character matter more than positions or material success.

“As I look back over these eighty years, I have come to appreciate one enduring truth: positions come and go; power is temporary; fame fades; wealth cannot satisfy the deepest longings of the human heart. What remains is character, faith, service to humanity, and our relationship with God.”

The former governor also expressed appreciation to former Heads of State and Presidents Ibrahim Babangida, Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan for the roles they played during different stages of his public service, while urging younger Nigerians to embrace values that would positively shape their future.
