Tinubu Congratulates Modi On 25 Years In Public Leadership
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on marking 25 years since he first assumed public office as Head of Government and Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001.
Tinubu, in a statement issued on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, described the milestone as a historic achievement, noting that Modi has maintained an uninterrupted record of public service for a quarter of a century.
The President said Modi served as the head of government in Gujarat for more than 12 years before becoming Prime Minister of India in 2014.
According to Tinubu, 25 years of continuous leadership in a democracy represents a significant milestone and reflects the confidence placed in Modi by the Indian people.
He commended the Indian Prime Minister’s focus on development, particularly in areas including infrastructure, digital public goods, financial inclusion and innovation.
Tinubu also highlighted what he described as India’s economic transformation under Modi, noting the country’s emergence as one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing economies.
The Nigerian President said Nigeria values its strategic relationship with India, recalling Modi’s State Visit to Abuja in November 2024, during which Nigeria conferred on him the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger.
Tinubu said the visit strengthened cooperation between both countries in areas including trade and investment, energy, defence and security, health, education and technology.
He further described Nigeria and India as leading democracies and voices of the Global South, noting that both countries share a commitment to a more inclusive and representative international order.
Tinubu expressed confidence that relations between Nigeria and India would continue to deepen under Modi’s leadership.
