Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has called on the Nigerian media to strengthen democratic governance by promoting accountability, professionalism and responsible journalism.

Uzodimma made the call while delivering a lecture titled “Media, Democratic Consolidation and Development” at the 3rd Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi Annual Diamond Lecture on Communication and Development.

The governor said democratic principles should not be limited to election periods, stressing that they must be upheld throughout every tenure of leadership and across all institutions.

According to him, the media has a critical responsibility in shaping public discourse, holding leaders accountable and contributing to national development.

Uzodimma urged media practitioners to ensure that their reports are firmly grounded in facts and figures while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and responsibility.

He said the media’s influence on society makes accuracy and responsible journalism essential to the consolidation of democracy.

The governor also commended the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) for instituting the annual memorial lecture in honour of the late Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi.

He said the lecture goes beyond preserving Dokpesi’s memory, describing it as an important platform for promoting professionalism, patriotism and accountability within the communication and media sector.

Uzodimma maintained that responsible journalism remains essential to building a democratic society where citizens are properly informed and institutions are held accountable.

He urged media professionals to continue using their platforms to advance national development while maintaining credibility and public trust.
