Police Arrest Three Over Sudden Death of Edo University Lecturer
The Edo State Police Command has arrested three people following the sudden death of a senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, in a hotel in the town.
Uwuigbe was found dead in a hotel room in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, after he reportedly lodged there with a 21-year-old woman on October 5, 2026.
The police said the woman had reportedly left the room to purchase water after Uwuigbe asked her to do so. She allegedly returned to find the lecturer unresponsive.
The incident was subsequently reported to the police, leading to the arrest of the hotel owner, manager and the woman who was with the deceased.
The Edo State Police spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed that the three suspects were being detained as investigation continued.
The remains of the lecturer have been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary, according to the police.
Meanwhile, Ambrose Alli University confirmed Uwuigbe as a member of its academic staff but clarified that the incident occurred outside the university premises.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, said the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death were a private matter and that the woman involved was not a student of the institution.
