LAWMA Says Mushin Clean, Warns Against Circulation of Old Waste Videos

Wahab

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has raised concerns over the circulation of old videos and images showing waste in parts of Mushin, warning that presenting the materials as current could mislead the public about the area’s present waste management situation.

The Authority said Mushin is currently clean, following sustained direct intervention over the past three weeks to address service delays and improve waste collection across the community.

Speaking on the development, LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the Authority had deployed its trucks to inner streets to collect waste directly from households and communities.

He explained that LAWMA had also engaged market and community leaders to improve coordination and ensure that identified gaps in waste collection were addressed promptly.

“Some of the videos being circulated as though they show the current situation in Mushin are old, and presenting them without dates or context is misleading,” Gbadegesin said.

He acknowledged that there had been service delays in some areas but noted that LAWMA had intervened, resulting in a different situation on the ground.

The LAWMA boss urged residents not to dump waste on road medians or other unauthorised locations, advising communities experiencing delays in waste collection to contact the Authority through their Community Development Associations (CDAs) or community leaders for interim direct collection.

Residents who spoke on the intervention also acknowledged improvements in waste evacuation.

Mrs. Taiwo Adenekan, a resident of Dakobiri Street, said LAWMA trucks had been coming into the market to evacuate accumulated waste, making disposal easier for residents and helping to prevent illegal dumping.

Similarly, Chief Samsideen Obawunmi, Babaloja of Irepodun Market, Mushin, said LAWMA’s engagement with market stakeholders had helped draw attention to waste management concerns, while traders were also being encouraged to dispose of refuse properly.

Alhaji Kazeem, General Secretary of Mushin Market, commended the Authority for engaging community representatives and responding to complaints, particularly through direct waste collection from inner streets.

Another resident, Owolabi Akinwande of Moroduke, Mushin, also welcomed the initiative, saying direct collection had made it easier for households to dispose of their waste properly.

LAWMA reiterated its zero tolerance for dumping waste on road medians, urging residents to keep their waste properly packaged and use approved collection channels.

The Authority assured communities experiencing service delays that it would continue to intervene where necessary while working with PSP operators, market leaders, CDAs and other stakeholders to strengthen waste collection in Mushin and other affected areas.

LAWMA also urged residents to disregard outdated materials being presented as current, report genuine service delays through the appropriate channels and support efforts towards maintaining a cleaner Lagos.
