Lack of Modern Medical Technology Driving Nigerians Abroad for Treatment — AI Hub CEO
The Chief Executive Officer of AI Hub Limited, Abubakar Bala Usman, has attributed the preference of some Nigerian leaders to seek medical treatment abroad to the lack of modern medical technology and inadequate investment in the country’s healthcare sector.
Usman made the observation while speaking with National Focus in a phone conversation, stressing that the challenge goes beyond the availability of skilled medical professionals.
According to him, Nigeria has capable medical professionals who can deliver quality healthcare services, but the lack of modern equipment and technology limits their ability to provide treatment to world-class standards.
He said the government must demonstrate greater commitment to investing in healthcare infrastructure and modern medical technology if Nigeria is to reduce the dependence on foreign hospitals.
Usman also called for increased investment from the private sector, saying both government and private investors have important roles to play in transforming the country’s healthcare system.
He noted that with the right investment and technological equipment, Nigeria would have the capacity to attract and retain the skilled professionals needed to operate modern healthcare facilities.
“If there is a will not only from the government but the private sector to invest in the healthcare sector, there will be brains to run our healthcare facilities to world-class standard,” Usman said.
He maintained that strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare technology and infrastructure would not only improve access to quality medical care but could also reduce the need for Nigerians, including political leaders, to travel abroad for treatment.
