[Video] Scavengers Vandalise Festac-Alakija Bridge, 27 Arrested in Lagos

The Lagos State Government has arrested 27 suspected hoodlums accused of vandalising critical structural components of the newly constructed bridge linking Festac Town to Alakija along the Lagos-Badagry Transnational Highway.
The suspects were reportedly caught removing iron rods, steel reinforcements, cables and other materials from the bridge’s supporting structures.
An eyewitness who raised the alarm over the development expressed concern that the continued removal of the structural materials could compromise the safety and durability of the bridge.
According to the eyewitness, the bridge, constructed about five years ago, had recently become a target for scavengers who allegedly broke through concrete sections of its pillars to remove embedded iron reinforcements.
The development has raised concerns over the possible deterioration of the infrastructure if the vandalism continues unchecked.
Reacting to the discovery, Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the vandalism was uncovered during an enforcement operation carried out in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s directive to rid the Lagos-Badagry highway of illegal activities and environmental infractions.
Wahab said the enforcement operation uncovered the deliberate destruction of critical components of the bridge, describing the act as a serious threat to public safety and government investment in infrastructure.
He said a joint midnight operation involving officers of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) task force was subsequently carried out at the location.
The operation resulted in the arrest of 27 suspected hoodlums, who the commissioner said would be prosecuted in accordance with the laws of Lagos State.
Wahab stressed that the state government would continue to protect public infrastructure and take decisive action against vandalism, environmental infractions and other activities capable of endangering residents.
