Anambra Police Confirm Ongoing Rescue After Amaokpala Building Collapse

Police

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that rescue operations are still underway following the collapse of the three-storey serving as a student hostel known as Elite Five Star Lodge in Amaokpala, Orumba North Local Government Area of the state.

The update comes after earlier reports of the late-night incident on Sunday, which left several occupants trapped beneath the rubble. In a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the command said police officers and other emergency responders were working tirelessly to rescue those still trapped.

According to the statement, the police-led joint security team immediately mobilised to the scene after receiving a distress call, secured the area to prevent further danger, and coordinated rescue efforts with other security agencies.

The Anambra State Fire Service and the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) also joined the operation, assisting in efforts to locate and rescue victims from the collapsed structure.

The police disclosed that some injured victims had already been pulled from the debris and taken to a hospital in Oko, where they are currently receiving treatment.

However, the command said it could not yet confirm the number of casualties or the total number of people affected, noting that rescue operations were still in progress.

The police urged residents to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and stay away from the scene to allow emergency workers unrestricted access as rescue efforts continue.

The command said further updates would be provided as more verified information becomes available.
