Lagos to Sanction Construction Sites Blocking Roads, Drainage Channels — Commissioner

Lagos

The Lagos State Government has warned that construction sites and property owners responsible for obstructing roads, drainage channels and rights-of-way will face sanctions, including penalties and prosecution.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stated this during an inspection tour of environmental and infrastructure projects across Lagos Central.

Wahab said the government would not tolerate environmental violations, particularly those involving the use of building materials to block roads and drainage channels or the construction of illegal structures along rights-of-way.

During the inspection, the commissioner visited ongoing urban regeneration projects on Lagos Island, where he inspected newly delivered infrastructure and drainage systems from Drop-in Extension 1 to 4.

He also visited the LAWMA Transfer Loading Station on Simpson Street to assess its operations, infrastructure and readiness to support efficient waste management.

The commissioner received a briefing from the facility’s management on its operational roadmap and ongoing infrastructure development.

Wahab said the ministry would commence regular and unannounced visits to agencies under its supervision to monitor performance and strengthen accountability.

At Victoria Garden City, Ajah, the commissioner also examined petitions concerning unusual flooding in the area and assessed the situation to determine appropriate interventions.

He directed relevant authorities to intensify preparations ahead of the next rainy season, particularly in areas where improved drainage performance is required.

Wahab said the state government’s vision was to build a cleaner and flood-resilient Lagos while transforming waste from an environmental challenge into a valuable resource.

He noted that investments in waste management infrastructure, material recovery facilities and transfer loading stations were helping the state move from a linear waste management system towards a circular economy.

The commissioner also said the rehabilitation of the Lekki-Epe Expressway was being carried out in phases to minimise disruption to residents, businesses and property owners.

He appealed to residents to remain patient and cooperate with the government as it continues efforts to create a safer, cleaner and more sustainable Lagos.
