Wahab Urges Lagosians to Make Environmental Cleanliness a Daily Habit

Lagos

Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, has urged residents to make environmental cleanliness a daily responsibility rather than limiting it to the state’s monthly sanitation exercise.

Wahab, while commending the growing participation of Lagosians in the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, said the development reflects progress in building a stronger culture of environmental responsibility across the state.

The commissioner acknowledged concerns over delays in waste evacuation and said the Lagos State Government was working on innovative approaches to strengthen waste management and improve the turnaround time for evacuating refuse across the state.

He, however, stressed that maintaining a clean environment should not be left to the government alone, urging residents to take responsibility for their surroundings.

Wahab called on Lagosians to stop indiscriminate dumping, separate recyclable materials from other waste and ensure that refuse is properly disposed of at all times.

“Do not wait for the monthly sanitation exercise. Do not wait for government officials to arrive. Start cleaning your surroundings today and make environmental cleanliness a daily responsibility,” he said.

The commissioner also praised the increasing involvement of residents, communities and schoolchildren in environmental sanitation activities, saying engaging young people would help build the environmental consciousness needed for the future of Lagos.

He urged residents to keep their streets and neighbourhoods clean and dispose of waste responsibly, saying the goal should be to make environmental cleanliness a way of life rather than a monthly exercise.
