The Ondo State Government has increased its 2026 budget from N524.411 billion to N769.384 billion to accelerate the implementation of critical infrastructure projects across the state.
The revised budget, which represents an increase of about N244.97 billion, is expected to support projects in road construction, water supply, healthcare and other key sectors.
The Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Olaolu Akindolire, disclosed this on Tuesday after the State Executive Council meeting in Akure.
Akindolire said the budget review followed a mid-year assessment of the implementation of the 2026 Appropriation Law, which was signed into law by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa on December 29, 2025, and became effective on January 1, 2026.
According to him, the revised appropriation has been forwarded to the Ondo State House of Assembly for ratification.
He explained that the first and second quarter budget implementation reports showed different levels of performance among Ministries, Departments and Agencies, with some MDAs facing increased demands and approaching their approved budgetary provisions.
Others, he said, recorded slower utilisation of funds due to implementation challenges.
He said the review was therefore necessary to close funding gaps, realign budgetary provisions and improve the pace of project implementation during the remaining months of the year.
Akindolire disclosed that Governor Aiyedatiwa had directed the construction of at least five kilometres of roads in each of Ondo State’s 18 local government areas before the end of 2026.
The directive translates to a minimum of 90 kilometres of new roads across the state.
He said the projects would improve connectivity, facilitate the movement of agricultural produce, connect communities to markets, schools and healthcare facilities, and boost economic activities in both urban and rural areas.
The commissioner also disclosed that additional funds had been provided for the construction of the Adegbola–St. Mathias flyover along Oba Adesida Road in Alagbaka, Akure.
He added that the revised budget also increased funding for water and healthcare projects.
According to him, anticipated development financing would support initiatives designed to improve access to potable water, while additional healthcare funding would strengthen service delivery and address emerging needs across the state.
Meanwhile, the State Executive Council approved the appointment of Prof. Thompson Akinyele Akinifesi as the pioneer Ekingbade of Bolorunduro in Ondo East Local Government Area.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Amidu Takuro, said the appointment would usher in a new era for the community, which serves as the headquarters of Bolorunduro Local Government.
The council also approved the appointment of warrant chiefs to facilitate the selection of new traditional rulers in Ikun Akoko in Akoko South-West, Ute in Ose Local Government Area and Ero in Ifedore Local Government Area.
The appointments are expected to facilitate the emergence of the new Olokun of Ikun Akoko, Olute of Ute and Ekiri of Ero.
Takuro said the state government remained committed to ensuring the smooth installation of traditional rulers in communities ready to select new obas without undue interference.
The Commissioner for Information, Idowu Ajanaku, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritising infrastructure development under the administration of Governor Aiyedatiwa.
He said the revised budget would enable the government to sustain ongoing projects while responding to emerging development needs across the state.
