FG Upgrades Riyom Hospital to National Trauma Centre
The Federal Government has upgraded the General Hospital Riyom in Plateau State into a National Trauma Centre, strengthening emergency healthcare response for road users and communities along the busy Jos-Abuja highway.
The facility, unveiled on Tuesday by the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (NEMSAS), will operate as an outpost of the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), according to the Federal Ministry of Health.
As part of efforts to improve emergency response, the centre has been equipped with 15 ambulances, comprising five conventional emergency ambulance buses and 10 tricycle ambulances designed to reach rural and hard-to-access communities.
The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Kachollom Daju, who represented the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, said the upgrade was aimed at ensuring that distance does not prevent Nigerians from accessing life-saving emergency medical care.
According to the Federal Government, the initiative is particularly targeted at improving response to maternal emergencies, road crashes and other trauma cases.
Daju commended the Plateau State Government for ceding the former General Hospital Riyom to the Federal Government for the establishment of the National Trauma Centre.
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, represented at the unveiling by Deputy Governor Josephine Piyo, described the project as a major investment in the lives and safety of Nigerians travelling along the Jos-Abuja highway.
She added that the Plateau State Government had earlier procured five ambulances through the Plateau State Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (PLASEMSAS) to strengthen emergency response across the state.
