Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has condemned the reported arrest of the state Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Sunday Bisi, describing it as an attack on democracy and calling for his immediate release.

In a statement signed by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Saturday, Adeleke said Bisi was allegedly arrested at his residence in Ilesa shortly after returning from his polling unit where he had cast his vote.

The governor expressed concern that the PDP chairman was taken away to an unknown location, saying the reason for his arrest had not been made known.

“Hon. Bisi was accosted in his home in Ilesa shortly after he returned after voting, and whisked him away to yet to be known location,” Adeleke said.

He alleged that the arrest was part of a wider attempt to prevent his supporters from monitoring the collation of results across the state.

Adeleke further alleged that security agencies were being used to intimidate members of his political camp, describing the development as “the biggest assault on democracy.”

He said, “I am calling for the immediate release of Hon. Bisi because his arrest is nothing but political,” while also demanding the release of what he described as other political prisoners across Osun State.

The governor warned against any attempt to manipulate the outcome of the election during the collation of results, stressing that the electorate should be allowed to freely determine who governs the state.

“Election should be about the people freely giving their mandates to the person of their choice without threat or force,” Adeleke said.
