AI Training to Reach 11,700 Teachers as FG Expands Digital Education Programme

The Federal Government has intensified efforts to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into Nigeria’s education system with the nationwide expansion of its AI Teacher Capacity Development Programme for teachers in Federal Unity Colleges.

In a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Education on Friday, the ministry announced the signing of a landmark agreement with ICEDT Consult Limited to implement the programme across all Federal Unity Colleges after a successful pilot phase in six schools representing the country’s six geopolitical zones.

The initiative, to be implemented through the ministry’s Education Support Services Department, is aimed at equipping teachers with practical AI and digital skills to improve lesson planning, classroom instruction, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning.

Speaking at the signing of the Terms of Reference in Abuja, the Director of Education Support Services, Mr. Gabriel O. Amudipe, described the programme as a strategic investment in the future of education and teacher professionalism.

He called on stakeholders to ensure effective implementation, quality assurance, and close monitoring as the programme is rolled out nationwide.

According to the ministry, about 11,700 teachers are expected to benefit from the initiative, positioning them to adopt AI-powered teaching methods and enhance students’ learning experiences.

The government said the programme is part of its broader digital education strategy aimed at preparing learners with the technological and digital competencies required for the 21st-century economy.

The ministry added that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to modernising Nigeria’s education system through technology-driven, inclusive, and globally competitive learning under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
