NITDA Begins IPv6 Migration for Government Agencies
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has commenced efforts to move government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) from the existing IPv4 system to IPv6.
The agency said the migration would help expand digital services, strengthen government infrastructure and support the implementation of the National Sovereign Cloud Initiative.
Speaking on behalf of NITDA Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa, at the opening of an IPv6 migration readiness workshop in Abuja, Mr Oladejo Olawumi said the upgrade had become necessary as the older IPv4 system faces growing pressure from the increasing number of connected devices globally.
He said IPv6 would provide a significantly larger address space and help government institutions build more reliable and scalable digital services.
According to him, the migration would also support the delivery of digital public services and reduce the need for citizens to visit government offices physically to access services.
The training programme adopts a dual approach, with executive-level officials receiving governance and leadership knowledge to support IPv6 adoption, while IT personnel are provided with professional certifications and advanced technical training.
The initiative is being supported by industry experts, including the Chairman of the IPv6 Council of Nigeria, Mohamed Rudman.
NITDA said the programme represents a major investment in strengthening institutional capacity and developing the technical skills required to support Nigeria’s digital transformation.
The agency is expected to work with MDAs to improve their readiness for the transition and ensure that government digital infrastructure can support the growing demand for online services.
