Tinubu’s Salary Increase for Armed Forces Takes Effect September 1

President Bola Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent, effective September 1, 2026.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who said the new pay package will benefit about 250,000 armed forces personnel across various ranks as part of the administration’s commitment to improving troop welfare and strengthening national security.

Under the new arrangement, officers above the rank of colonel including Brigadier Generals, Major Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals will receive a 30 per cent salary increase. Personnel from Colonel to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent raise, while those from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest increase of 80 per cent.

The revised salary structure will increase the Federal Government’s annual salary bill for the armed forces from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion.

President Tinubu said the decision reflects his administration’s appreciation of the sacrifices made by military personnel in combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.

“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.

He added that his administration would continue to prioritise troop welfare and modernise the armed forces by providing the weapons and technological tools required to carry out their constitutional responsibilities.

“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians,” Tinubu said.

The President urged military personnel to see the salary increase as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for their service, expressing confidence that the armed forces would continue to safeguard the nation’s peace and stability.
