NAFDAC Intensifies Nationwide Crackdown on Sachet Alcohol, Warns Offenders of Prosecution

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intensified nationwide enforcement of the Federal Government’s ban on sachet alcohol and alcoholic beverages packaged in PET bottles of 200ml and below as part of efforts to curb alcohol abuse and protect public health.

The agency announced the renewed enforcement in a statement posted on its official X handle, stating that the exercise is aimed at protecting Nigerians, particularly children and young people, from the harmful effects of excessive alcohol consumption.

NAFDAC said the enforcement follows the expiration of the five-year moratorium granted to manufacturers after years of stakeholder consultations, public sensitisation and engagement with industry operators.

The agency disclosed that enforcement operations carried out across Lagos, Ogun and other states uncovered widespread violations, including the production of banned alcoholic beverages, the use of unregistered manufacturing facilities and attempts to evade regulatory oversight.

It warned that manufacturers, distributors and retailers found producing or selling the prohibited products would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

NAFDAC also condemned attacks on its enforcement officers during recent operations, describing the incidents as criminal acts and assuring the public that those responsible would be investigated and prosecuted.

The agency reiterated that the ban remains in force and urged manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers and consumers to comply fully with the regulations.

NAFDAC added that nationwide enforcement would continue until all prohibited alcoholic products are removed from circulation in order to safeguard public health and reduce alcohol abuse across the country.
