Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team demands apology over alleged killing comment

The legal team of Nnamdi Kanu has demanded an immediate public retraction and apology over a statement allegedly made on News Central TV calling on the Federal Government to kill the detained IPOB leader.

In a press release dated July 21, 2026, and signed by Aloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel to Kanu, the lawyers condemned remarks allegedly made by Chigozie Nnabugwu during a News Central TV programme.

According to the statement, a video containing the comment was published on the verified X account of News Central TV on July 19, 2026, and later went viral.

The legal team described the alleged call for Kanu’s killing as reckless, irresponsible, unlawful, and a threat to life.

“This call for extrajudicial killing is reckless, irresponsible, and unlawful. And it constitutes a clear threat to life and risks inciting a breakdown of public order,” the statement said.

Kanu’s lawyers said the statement could violate Section 24(1) of the Cybercrimes Act, which criminalises the intentional transmission of messages through electronic means that threaten life or may cause a breakdown of law and order.

They also argued that News Central TV could face regulatory scrutiny for allegedly airing content capable of inciting violence or disturbing public peace.

“We hereby demand that Mr. Chigozie Nnabugwu issue an immediate public retraction of his statement, and that News Central TV tender an unqualified televised apology for airing such dangerous content,” the legal team stated.

The lawyers further warned that the press release serves as a pre-action notice and that legal action may follow if both parties fail to take immediate remedial measures.
