“Fix Nigeria or Stop Lecturing Those Who Left,” ADC Spokesperson Tells Federal Government

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the Federal Government over recent remarks directed at Nigerians living abroad, saying the government should focus on addressing the country’s challenges instead of condemning citizens who relocated in search of better opportunities.

In a statement, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said it was unfortunate that a government which, according to him, has failed to improve the living conditions of Nigerians was now extending what he described as “disregard” to citizens in the diaspora.

Abdullahi argued that the government had fallen short in key sectors including security, the economy, healthcare and education, insisting that it had no justification for claiming that Nigerians were better off at home than those living abroad.

“Until this government can guarantee safety, create jobs, restore economic stability, and inspire confidence at home, it should either fix Nigeria or stop lecturing Nigerians who have simply done what the government itself has failed to do: secured a better future for themselves and their families,” he said.

The ADC spokesperson also highlighted the economic contributions of Nigerians abroad, noting that official diaspora remittances remain a major source of foreign exchange for the country.

According to him, Nigeria earned about US$31.5 billion from oil exports in 2025, while official diaspora remittances reached US$21.8 billion during the same period, underscoring the significant role Nigerians living overseas continue to play in supporting the nation’s economy.

He maintained that rather than criticising Nigerians who chose to relocate, the government should concentrate on creating an environment that encourages citizens to remain in the country and thrive.
