FG, UNESCO, Japan Launch Digital Teacher Training for 2,000 Nigerian Educators

The FG, UNESCO, Japan Digital Teacher Training initiative has commenced a three-day Master Training Workshop aimed at strengthening teacher professional development through mobile-based learning, with a target of reaching at least 2,000 teachers and school leaders across Nigeria.

The programme, organised by the Federal Ministry of Education in partnership with the Government of Japan, UNESCO-IICBA, the Pan-African University (PAU), and Castalia Co. Ltd. under the Pan-African Virtual and Electronic University (PAVEU) Initiative, is designed to equip master trainers with digital skills that will improve access to continuous professional development nationwide.

Representing the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, the Director of Colleges of Education, Dr. Uchenna Uba, described the FG, UNESCO, Japan Digital Teacher Training programme as a major milestone in advancing teacher quality, digital innovation, and improved learning outcomes under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI).

He noted that the workshop places special emphasis on empowering female school leaders while providing participants with training in digital literacy, Artificial Intelligence in Education, gender-responsive pedagogy, mental health, learner-centred teaching, and the GOKU Mobile Learning Platform.

Japan is investing approximately US$1 million in the initiative, while partners also presented 40 tablets and two edge computing devices to support nationwide implementation of the programme.

The Federal Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging technology and strategic partnerships to deliver inclusive, equitable, and quality education for every Nigerian child.

The FG, UNESCO, Japan Digital Teacher Training initiative is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s education sector by improving teachers’ digital competence and expanding access to modern learning tools across schools nationwide.
