INEC, NIMC Digital Alliance to Strengthen Credible Elections in Nigeria

INEC, NIMC Digital Alliance is expected to strengthen credible elections in Nigeria as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) move to deepen cooperation on digital identity and voter verification.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made this known while receiving the Director-General of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, and her management team at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja. He said the newly signed National Identity Management Commission Act, 2026, provides a stronger legal framework for collaboration between both agencies to improve the country’s electoral system.
Speaking during the visit, Coker-Odusote said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the new NIMC Act into law on June 26, 2026, describing it as a landmark reform that transforms NIMC into Nigeria’s central digital identity authority.
She explained that the law makes NIMC the foundation of Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and Root Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), providing a secure digital trust system for government services and other transactions.
According to her, the reforms will help reduce identity fraud, improve access to public and private services, strengthen the digital economy, and support more reliable voter verification during elections.
She also assured INEC of NIMC’s readiness to work closely with the electoral body to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections, noting that trusted digital identity is essential for credible democratic processes.
