Peter Obi Condemns Arrest of Supporters in Akwa Ibom

NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the arrest of the OK Movement coordinator in Akwa Ibom State Elijah Noah and other supporters on Independence Day.

Obi expressed his position in a statement shared on his social media platforms on Friday, October 2, 2026, saying Nigeria’s independence would mean little if citizens could not freely express themselves within the law.

“As we continue to reflect on Nigeria’s Independence, we must remember that independence means very little if citizens cannot freely express themselves, within the bounds of the law, without fear,” Obi said.

He further criticised what he described as a recurring pattern in which individuals who once advocated for freedom and justice later become defenders of actions they previously opposed when they assume positions of authority.

“One of the greatest tragedies of our society is that people who once described themselves as freedom fighters can become defenders of oppression when they eventually occupy positions of authority,” he said.

Obi added that people who once complained about injustice should not become comfortable with it when it is allegedly perpetrated against those with whom they disagree.

“That must not be the Nigeria we accept,” he said.

It will be recalled that Akwa Ibom State Police Command had earlier advised political parties and groups to reschedule rallies planned for October 1 due to security considerations.
