NDPC, NOA Sign MoU To Strengthen Data Protection Awareness Nationwide

NDPC

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen public awareness and compliance with Nigeria’s data protection laws.

The agreement was signed by the NDPC leadership and the Director-General of the NOA, Dr Lanre Issa-Onilu, as part of efforts to deepen citizens’ understanding of their data protection rights and responsibilities.

The NDPC said the partnership is strategic because the NOA has a nationwide presence across all 774 Local Government Areas, providing a platform through which data protection information can reach communities across the country.

According to the Commission, the MoU will provide a framework for both institutions to collaborate on capacity building and training for NOA personnel, as well as coordinated public awareness campaigns.

The partnership will also support the expansion of data protection messaging through traditional and digital media channels, with the aim of improving public understanding of privacy rights and encouraging compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023.

The NDPC described data protection as a collective responsibility, noting that public awareness remains a major component of its mandate.

The Commission expressed appreciation to Issa-Onilu for his commitment to the partnership and commended his leadership of the NOA.

It also said the collaboration would contribute to building a more privacy-conscious Nigeria by bringing data protection education closer to citizens across the country.
