LASTMA Warns Children, Youths Against Using Rolling Skate Shoes on Highways
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has warned children, teenagers and young adults against using rolling skate shoes and other wheeled footwear on public highways, citing the risk of serious traffic accidents and life-threatening injuries.
The Authority issued the warning in a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, urging parents, guardians, schools and caregivers to discourage children from skating on roads used by motorists.
LASTMA said the increasing use of footwear fitted with concealed or retractable wheels on highways, bridges, service lanes and other vehicular corridors poses significant safety risks, particularly when users glide alongside moving vehicles or cross roads without adequate supervision.
According to the Authority, public highways are unpredictable environments where vehicles, motorcycles and pedestrians move simultaneously, making recreational skating in such areas dangerous.
It advised users of rolling skate shoes to restrict their activities to designated recreational areas, private compounds and other safe locations suitable for skating.
The traffic agency also recommended the use of protective equipment, including helmets, knee pads and elbow pads, during skating activities.
