Borno Police Recover 52 Stolen Phones, Meet GSM Dealers Over Rising Theft

Borno

The Borno State Police Command has recovered 52 stolen mobile phones in the past month as part of efforts to tackle the rising cases of phone theft and handset snatching in Maiduguri.

The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, disclosed this on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, during a strategic meeting with members of the Maiduguri GSM Market Committee.

The meeting was held to address growing concerns over phone theft, handset snatching and the illegal buying and selling of stolen mobile phones within Maiduguri metropolis.

Abdulmajid urged GSM dealers and other stakeholders in the telecommunications business to remain vigilant and ensure their shops and businesses were not used as channels for selling or disposing of stolen phones.

The Commissioner also called on members of the GSM Village Committee to support the police by providing timely information that could help identify individuals involved in phone theft and the circulation of stolen handsets.

He stressed the importance of cooperation between security agencies, GSM dealers and members of the public in curbing the crime.

The Chairman of the Maiduguri GSM Market Association, Aliko Dass, assured the police of the association’s commitment to sharing intelligence and providing useful information to help prevent the circulation of stolen mobile phones.

The association also pledged to cooperate with the police in identifying individuals involved in the illegal trade of stolen handsets.

The command urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the police.
