Tesla Unveils Car That Drives Without a Driver
Tesla has unveiled its new Cybercab, a purpose-built vehicle designed to operate as a robotaxi without a human driver.
The electric vehicle, which has no steering wheel or pedals, is being tested in Austin, Texas, where dozens of Cybercabs have been deployed to carry passengers without an employee inside the vehicle.
The two-seat Cybercab features a sleek, aerodynamic design, spacious interior, large trunk and upward-opening doors. Tesla has also incorporated Starlink connectivity to support communication with the vehicle and provide internet access for passengers.
Tesla says the Cybercab could eventually be produced at a cost of about $30,000, potentially making driverless transportation more affordable as the technology develops.
However, experts say Tesla still faces major challenges, particularly with its self-driving software. The company relies heavily on cameras, while several competitors use additional sensors and technologies to support autonomous driving.
Tesla has reported that its vehicles operating without employees onboard have travelled about one million miles, but questions remain about the extent of remote supervision and the system’s readiness for large-scale deployment.
