Hear What Peter Obi Said After Thugs Blocked His Visit to Yelwata, Benue

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has said thugs stopped him from visiting Yelwata community in Benue State, where more than 270 people were reportedly killed.
Obi said he travelled to Benue on Tuesday morning on a humanitarian mission to visit families affected by the killings and offer comfort to the bereaved.
According to him, he arrived in the state at about 9:00 a.m., but his convoy was prevented from proceeding to Yelwata by thugs who chanted, “Peter Obi, go back.”
The NDC candidate described the incident as deeply distressing, stressing that his visit was not politically motivated.
“I came to Benue not for partisan politics, but to mourn with our people, to listen to families who have lost loved ones, and to offer comfort at a moment of unimaginable sorrow,” Obi said.
He expressed concern that a humanitarian mission intended to show solidarity with victims could be obstructed, urging Nigerians to reject actions capable of deepening divisions.
Obi said the people of Benue and other Nigerians deserve to live, travel and farm without fear, adding that the protection of human life should remain the government’s primary responsibility.
Although he could not reach Yelwata, Obi said his thoughts and prayers remained with the victims, their families and the entire community.
He added that he would continue to advocate for the protection of Nigerians until the government restores security and ensures that citizens can live without fear.
