Aiyedatiwa Signs New Electricity Law to Boost Power Supply, Investment in Ondo
Ondo State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has signed the Ondo State Electric Power Sector (Amendment) Law, 2026, introducing a new legal framework to strengthen electricity generation, transmission and distribution across the state.
The new law establishes the State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC) to regulate electricity tariffs, licences, investments, mini-grids, renewable energy and other activities in the sector.
It also creates the State Independent System Operator and State Market Operator to support a more efficient and coordinated electricity market in Ondo State.
The legislation makes metering compulsory and provides protection for community and privately funded electricity infrastructure. It also introduces penalties for the sabotage of electricity facilities.
Another key provision is the establishment of the Equipment Standards and Competence Certification Agency (ESCCA), which will regulate electrical equipment and certify professionals working in the sector.
The law further strengthens the Ondo State Power Company and provides greater protection and certainty for investors in electricity generation, distribution, renewable energy and related infrastructure.
According to the state government, the new framework is designed to attract private-sector investment, expand access to electricity and promote renewable energy development.
The government also said reliable electricity supply would help drive industrialisation, create economic opportunities and support sustainable development across Ondo State.
