LASTMA Rescues Critically Injured Hit-and-Run Victim at Ojota

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has rescued a critically injured victim of a hit-and-run crash at Ojota, Lagos, after the unidentified driver allegedly fled the scene and left the victim unattended.

The incident occurred over the weekend on the main carriageway around Ketu inward Ojota, according to a statement issued by LASTMA’s Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq.

LASTMA officers who arrived at the scene immediately secured the area, managed traffic and took steps to prevent further danger to the injured victim and other road users.

The victim was found in critical condition with multiple traumatic injuries, including severe fractures and a serious head injury. He was reportedly still alive when LASTMA officials arrived but required urgent medical attention.

The officers subsequently contacted the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), whose medical personnel arrived at the scene to assess the victim. Following the assessment, the medical team reportedly expressed concern over the severity of his injuries and the need for specialised trauma care.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the alleged abandonment of the victim by the unidentified motorist, describing the action as irresponsible and unacceptable.

“The decision by a motorist to flee the scene of a crash, particularly where another person has sustained life-threatening injuries, is deeply reprehensible and could have devastating consequences. In emergencies of this nature, every second is consequential.”

Bakare-Oki commended the LASTMA officers who responded to the incident, praising their courage and professionalism despite the distressing circumstances.

He also appealed to eyewitnesses, motorists and members of the public with credible information that could help identify the fleeing driver to provide such information to relevant law-enforcement authorities.

The agency urged motorists to exercise caution and responsibility on Lagos roads, particularly by avoiding excessive speed, reckless driving and other behaviours that could endanger other road users.

LASTMA also called on members of the public to promptly alert emergency-response agencies whenever road crashes occur, stressing that the preservation of human life should remain the priority at any crash scene.
