INEC Investigates Suspected AI-Generated Photos In Voters’ Register

INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has launched an investigation into suspected AI-generated photographs discovered in the preliminary register of voters published on its website.

The commission disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, following public concerns over the authenticity of some photographs circulating on social media.

INEC explained that the online register published on October 26 was the same preliminary register displayed physically at Registration Areas nationwide between October 9 and 15.

It said questionable registration records were identified during the physical display exercise and flagged for further examination and corrective action.

INEC said it was investigating the circumstances surrounding the suspicious photographs, including possible technical or procedural lapses that may have allowed them to appear in the register.

The commission stressed that the preliminary register was not the final certified version, noting that the Display, Claims and Objections exercise was designed to identify irregularities and allow corrections before certification.

INEC added that verified irregularities would be addressed through established procedures ahead of the scheduled certification of the final Register of Voters on December 15, 2026.
