UNDP, GSMA Strengthen Africa’s Drive For Homegrown AI
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the GSMA have entered a new partnership aimed at helping African innovators move artificial intelligence (AI) projects from development and pilot stages into real-world applications.
The partnership will combine the GSMA’s mobile industry networks with UNDP’s development programmes and innovation platforms to improve access to infrastructure, expertise and opportunities for African developers building AI solutions for local needs.
A major focus of the partnership is African-language AI, as governments, researchers and technology companies continue efforts to develop AI systems that can understand African languages, cultures and local contexts.
Through UNDP’s timbuktoo initiative, the organisations will work to improve access to computing infrastructure for selected AI projects, connect African talent with real-world applications and support the deployment of locally developed solutions.
The partnership also aims to help successful AI projects move beyond the pilot stage by bringing together universities, AI laboratories, innovators, development partners and the mobile industry.
