What Are You Running Away From?” — Paul Ibe Questions Tinubu Over UNGA Absence
Paul Ibe, a media aide to former Vice President and African Democratic congress Presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has questioned President Bola Tinubu’s decision not to personally attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
The Presidency confirmed on Sunday that Tinubu had mandated Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent him and lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st UNGA. Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate.
Reacting to the development, Ibe questioned why Tinubu would once again be absent from the annual gathering of world leaders, noting that the President attended the UNGA only once since assuming office in May 2023.
He described the development as a matter deserving explanation, particularly because, according to him, earlier reports indicated that Tinubu was expected to attend this year’s UNGA and address the General Assembly.
“Why is the President of Africa’s most populous country repeatedly absent from one of the world’s most important annual gatherings of heads of state and government?” Ibe asked.
He also questioned whether any planned bilateral meeting between Tinubu and US President Donald Trump had been scheduled, cancelled or affected by the change in plans.
Ibe further raised concerns about Nigeria’s diplomatic representation, recalling the government’s recall of ambassadors in 2023 and the subsequent announcement of new ambassadorial postings in 2026.
He argued that Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements are important for attracting investment, strengthening security cooperation, promoting trade and advancing the country’s interests internationally.
The 81st UNGA General Debate is scheduled to run from September 22 to 28, 2026, at the UN headquarters in New York.
Ibe therefore called on the Presidency to explain the reason behind Tinubu’s decision not to attend personally, saying Nigerians are entitled to ask questions about changes to the country’s international representation.
