NDPC Commissions New Headquarters, Says Data Protection Key to Nigeria’s Digital Future
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has commissioned its new headquarters in Abuja, marking a major milestone in the country’s data protection and digital transformation efforts.
The facility was officially commissioned by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, who commended the leadership of the Commission for its progress in strengthening data protection in Nigeria.
The minister also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s support for the sector, including the signing of the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, the directive for government agencies to comply with data protection regulations and the allocation of the property as the Commission’s new headquarters.
According to the minister, the NDPC has grown from a 12-member unit within NITDA into a full-fledged data protection authority. The Commission has licensed 356 Data Protection Compliance Organisations, supported over 27,000 jobs, reached more than 66,000 Nigerians through its Virtual Privacy Academy and conducted about 228 training programmes benefiting over 99,000 people.
The new facility, described as the largest Data Protection Authority office in Africa, is expected to strengthen the Commission’s capacity to protect Nigerians’ privacy and promote responsible data use.
The minister said the new headquarters should serve as a platform for greater impact, stressing that trust, privacy and responsible data use are fundamental to Nigeria’s digital future.
