President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed the latest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which showed that Nigeria’s economy grew by 4.43 percent in the second quarter of 2026.

The statement was issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on August 31, 2026.

The figure represents an increase from the 4.23 percent growth recorded in the second quarter of 2025.

According to the report, key sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, oil and gas, and services, recorded growth, with the service sector remaining the largest contributor to Nigeria’s aggregate GDP.

In nominal terms, Nigeria’s aggregate GDP stood at N119.27 trillion in the second quarter of 2026, representing an 18.43 percent increase from the N100.7 trillion recorded during the corresponding period in 2025.

Reacting to the development, President Tinubu said the economic reforms introduced by his administration since May 2023 were beginning to produce results.

The President said the reforms were necessary to stabilise the economy and lay the foundation for long-term prosperity.

“In the past three years, we tried to do the hard part by implementing the necessary reforms to stabilise the economy. Now the economy is stabilised, and we have laid the foundation for a prosperous nation,” Tinubu said.

He said his administration did not introduce the reforms to create hardship but to ensure that economic prosperity eventually reaches Nigerians.

Tinubu pointed to what he described as improvements in Nigeria’s trade balance, foreign reserves, credit ratings, infrastructure development, investment inflows and oil and gas production.

The President also said Nigerian universities had experienced improved academic stability, while programmes such as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and Creditcorp were helping students and civil servants access financial support.

Tinubu said the Federal Government would, in the coming weeks, introduce additional interventions aimed at supporting vulnerable Nigerians.

These measures, according to him, would include providing cheaper transportation options, increasing food production and implementing relief programmes targeted at grassroots communities.

“We are fully committed to translating consistent, stronger economic performance into better microeconomic outcomes for our citizens,” the President said.

He added that his administration remained committed to ensuring that Nigeria’s economic progress translates into improved living conditions and stronger purchasing power for households across the country.
