Lagos Acquires 200 Compactor Trucks to Boost Waste Evacuation
Lagos State has acquired over 200 compactor trucks as part of efforts to strengthen waste evacuation and improve sanitation services across the state.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this while speaking during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in FESTAC, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area.
Wahab said the Lagos State Government was intensifying efforts to build a more efficient, sustainable and accountable waste management system.
He explained that the Ministry was working round the clock to address challenges at landfills, dumpsites and critical waste collection points, while engaging Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators to improve service delivery.
The commissioner added that the government was focused on improving the quality and reliability of waste collection services, noting that residents’ willingness to pay was directly linked to efficient service delivery.
He also warned residents against patronising unregulated cart pushers, whose activities, he said, often lead to indiscriminate dumping of waste on roads, medians and drainage channels.
According to Wahab, such indiscriminate dumping poses serious environmental risks and contributes to flooding.
He urged Lagos residents to take responsibility for proper waste disposal, stressing that keeping the state clean should be a daily responsibility and not limited to environmental sanitation days.
