NIMC, Defence Ministry Strengthen Collaboration on Digital Identity for National Security

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Ministry of Defence have agreed to deepen collaboration towards strengthening Nigeria’s secure digital identity ecosystem and improving the use of identity management systems in national security operations.

The development followed a strategic visit by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, alongside the Commission’s management team to the Honourable Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (Rtd), OFR.

During the meeting, both institutions discussed ways to leverage trusted digital identity solutions to enhance defence administration, improve data integrity and support secure service delivery across the country.

NIMC said the collaboration is aimed at advancing the integration of digital identity into Nigeria’s security architecture, particularly through the effective use of the National Identification Number (NIN) for personnel identity management.

The Commission noted that a reliable identity system is critical to strengthening national security, improving operational efficiency and supporting effective governance.

The Minister of Defence commended NIMC’s achievements, especially the enactment of the NIMC Act 2026, and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to sustaining a stronger partnership with the Commission.

NIMC stated that the partnership aligns with the Federal Government’s digital transformation agenda and efforts to build a trusted identity ecosystem capable of supporting security, public services and national development.
