Ayra Starr announces Hollywood debut in ‘Children of Blood and Bone’ alongside Viola Davis, Idris Elba

Nigerian Afrobeats star, Ayra Starr, has announced her entry into Hollywood as she makes her acting debut in the highly anticipated fantasy film adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling novel, Children of Blood and Bone.

The singer, whose real name is Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, shared her excitement over the new career milestone, describing the project as her “first movie” as she transitions from music into acting.

Ayra Starr joins a globally recognised cast for the Paramount Pictures production, which features Nigerian actress Thuso Mbedu in the lead role of Zélie Adebola, alongside Hollywood stars including Oscar winners Viola Davis and Regina King, Idris Elba, Cynthia Erivo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Damson Idris, Amandla Stenberg, Tosin Cole, Lashana Lynch, Zackary Momoh and Nigerian veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood, known for works such as The Woman King, the movie is based on Adeyemi’s 2018 young adult fantasy novel and is set in the fictional West African-inspired kingdom of Orïsha.

The story follows Zélie Adebola, a young woman on a mission to restore magic to her people after it was wiped out by a powerful monarchy. She teams up with her brother and members of the royal family in a battle against oppression and to reclaim the lost powers of their land.

The film has attracted global attention for its African-inspired mythology, cultural representation and its combination of African and international talents. Parts of the production were filmed in Lagos, Nigeria, further connecting the fantasy world of Orïsha with African landscapes and creative contributions.

Ayra Starr’s appearance in the project marks another international achievement for the 22-year-old singer, who rose to global fame with hit songs including “Rush” and has become one of Africa’s leading young music exports.

Her acting debut also adds to the growing list of Nigerian music stars making moves beyond the recording studio, with the singer joining a production that brings together some of the biggest names in global entertainment.

Children of Blood and Bone is scheduled to hit cinemas and IMAX on January 15, 2027.
