NITDA Partners NAWOJ to Boost Digital Literacy, Empower Women Across Nigeria
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has reaffirmed its commitment to achieving 70 percent digital literacy across Nigeria by 2027 through strategic partnerships, including a new collaboration with the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ).
The partnership was announced during a meeting at NITDA Headquarters in Abuja, where the agency’s Director of Stakeholder Management and Partnerships, Dr. Aristotle Onumo, represented the Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi.
Onumo said NITDA’s digital literacy drive is built on a multi-pronged strategy aimed at equipping millions of Nigerians with digital skills. He revealed that the agency plans to train 80 digital literacy champions in each stream of every annual NYSC batch, with a target of reaching 10 million Nigerians within one year and 30 million within three years by leveraging the scheme’s presence in all 774 local government areas.
He also disclosed that NITDA is expanding digital capacity among public servants, noting that nearly 600,000 federal civil servants have already enrolled on the agency’s online learning platform. According to him, digital literacy is also being integrated into school curricula in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission, with a pilot programme already underway at Nasarawa State University.
Speaking on the new partnership with NAWOJ, Onumo described women journalists as critical stakeholders in advancing digital inclusion across the country.
“Partnering with NAWOJ will help us reach women groups across the federation,” he said, adding that trained women journalists will serve as key advocates and multipliers of the digital literacy campaign.
Both organisations agreed to formalise the partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which will define the collaboration’s objectives, deliverables and implementation timeline.
NITDA also accepted NAWOJ’s invitation to participate in the association’s forthcoming summit and extended an invitation to the group to attend the Digital Nigeria International Conference scheduled to hold from November 10 to 12, 2026.
