Trump Praises Tinubu’s Leadership Against Terrorism

United States President Donald Trump has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as his decisive leadership in tackling terrorism and insecurity in Nigeria.

In a letter dated July 6, 2026, and released by the State House on Wednesday, Trump commended Tinubu’s resolve to address the challenges affecting Nigeria, particularly the violence impacting Christian communities.

“Thank you for your thoughtful letter. Your kind words mean a great deal to me, and I appreciate your decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people,” Trump wrote.

He added, “I applaud your resolve to tackle the issues plaguing your nation, especially the violence affecting Christian communities, and it is a true honour to stand with you in the fight against terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous.”

The letter highlighted the growing security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, noting that the two countries have worked closely in recent times to address security challenges affecting parts of Nigeria.

In November last year, President Trump and President Tinubu agreed to establish a Joint Working Group co-headed by the National Security Advisers of both countries. The group is focused on training, intelligence sharing, and joint operations aimed at combating terrorist activities.

A major outcome of the collaboration was the coordinated attack on ISIS hideouts in the Lake Chad area on May 16, which reportedly led to the killing of the group’s top leader, Abubakar Al-Minoki, and several of his lieutenants.

Trump also stated that the United States had deployed Special Operations Forces to support the Armed Forces of Nigeria with skills, tools, and intelligence needed to protect the country and ensure the safety of its citizens.

He expressed optimism about continued discussions with President Tinubu during his presidency and reaffirmed the importance of the US-Nigeria relationship in confronting terrorism across West Africa and beyond.
