Abia Pharmaceutical Technology Hub Gains Momentum As Otti Backs Egyptian Drug Manufacturing Investment

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has expressed support for an ambitious plan to establish an Abia pharmaceutical technology hub through a proposed drug manufacturing investment by Egyptian pharmaceutical company, Utopia.

The governor made this known while receiving a delegation from Utopia, led by Dr. Kamel Mohamed and facilitated by Eze Apostle Gift Chibuzor Chinyere, during a meeting in Abia State.

Otti described the proposal as more than a commercial venture, emphasizing that it represents a strategic investment in local production, technology transfer, job creation, and economic growth.

“This is not just about selling products; it is about production, job creation, technology transfer, and boosting our State’s GDP,” the governor said.

The proposed Abia pharmaceutical technology hub is expected to introduce advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, modern production systems, and technical expertise that could strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare and biotech industries.

Governor Otti assured the investors of the state government’s commitment to supporting the project, including the provision of land and other necessary incentives to ensure its successful implementation.

He encouraged the company to consider the Ukwa or Osisioma axis for the location of the plant, citing the availability of steady power supply from Geometric Power as a major advantage for high-tech manufacturing operations.

The governor noted that the partnership has the potential to position Abia as a leading centre for advanced pharmaceutical technology in Nigeria and West Africa, while also reducing dependence on imported medicines.
