Information Minister Urges Bloggers to Embrace Ethical Journalism

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has urged bloggers, online content creators and digital influencers in Nigeria to embrace ethical journalism and focus on nation-building.

Idris made the call on Monday while speaking at the Niger State Bloggers, Online Publishers and Content Developers Forum held in Abuja.

He said digital platforms provide many opportunities for innovation and civic engagement, but warned that they must be used responsibly to promote truth, national unity and constructive public discussion.

“There is no democracy that can thrive without a responsible media. You cannot carry freedom and abandon responsibility,” the minister said.

Mohammed Idris urged bloggers to verify information before publication and avoid spreading misinformation and disinformation. He also advised them to reject sensationalism and use their platforms to educate, inspire and promote national development.

The minister encouraged young Nigerians to see digital content creation not only as a way to earn income, but also as a tool for civic engagement and nation-building.

He stressed that ethical communication is important for strengthening democracy and building public trust in Nigeria.

Idris also highlighted the establishment of the International Media and Information Literacy Institute (IMILI), which he described as the world’s first UNESCO Category 2 Institute dedicated to Media and Information Literacy.

According to him, the institute is a major step towards promoting digital literacy and responsible online engagement in Nigeria.

The minister further encouraged bloggers and digital entrepreneurs to continue improving their skills and uphold professional standards that will strengthen the credibility of Nigeria’s online media ecosystem.
