Nigeria Digital Transformation Depends on Infrastructure, Technology Stacks — Bosun Tijani
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, has said Nigeria’s digital transformation depends on sustained investment in digital infrastructure, technology stacks and data exchange systems to build a globally competitive digital economy.
Tijani stated this while discussing initiatives driving Nigeria’s digital transformation on TVC’s programme, Your View, where he highlighted digital infrastructure, talent development and other priorities shaping the country’s digital future.
The minister explained that every digital interaction consumes data, making investment in digital infrastructure critical to deepening Nigeria’s technological foundation and supporting the development of local digital talent.
He described technology stacks as the middle layer of the digital ecosystem, likening them to a railway system that enables multiple technological solutions to operate on a common foundation.
“The reason why banking is where it is in Nigeria today is because we have something called the interbank settlement system. It is a technological stack that allows banks to exchange data. Without that system, most of our banks would be analogue,” Tijani said.
Tijani noted that Nigeria’s interbank settlement system has been a major driver of the country’s financial technology growth, enabling seamless transfers between banks and creating an environment for fintech companies such as Flutterwave and Moniepoint to thrive.
He also highlighted the importance of digital identity systems, including the National Identification Number, in verifying individuals online and enabling secure digital transactions.
According to the minister, the Federal Government’s digital transformation agenda is aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of addressing national challenges through technology and placing Nigeria on a path of sustainable development.
