Emergency responders have contained a fire outbreak at Oke Arin Street, Mushin, Lagos, preventing the flames from spreading to nearby structures.

The incident occurred on Tuesday when a room on the top floor of a one-storey building was engulfed by fire, destroying household items.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said its Alpha Eagle Team from Cappa Base received the distress alert at about 1:26pm and arrived at the scene within the estimated response time.

LASEMA, its Response Unit Fire Team and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service worked together to put out the fire.

The agency said the affected area was subsequently dampened to prevent the fire from reigniting or escalating to adjoining structures.

No casualty or loss of life was recorded in the incident, while the immediate cause of the fire had not been established.

LASEMA urged residents to observe fire-safety measures and promptly report emergencies through the toll-free emergency numbers 767 and 112.

The agency said the response formed part of ongoing efforts to maintain emergency readiness and protect lives and property across Lagos.

Workers of the Imo State Local Government Service Commission across the 27 local government areas have appealed to Governor Hope Uzodimma to urgently intervene over alleged unpaid salaries and arrears dating back to 2020.
The affected workers, in a letter dated September 3, 2026, said they had endured six years without receiving their salaries despite participating in official government exercises, including promotions, conversions, transfers and deployments.
They alleged that the prolonged non-payment had subjected them and their families to severe hardship, while some of their colleagues had died and others retired without receiving their outstanding salaries and benefits.
The workers said Governor Uzodimma had on March 6, 2026, at Ndubuisi Kalu Square, Heroes Square, New Owerri, directed the Chairman of the Imo State Local Government Service Commission to ensure that they were paid after their re-verification.
However, they said more than five months after the directive, they had yet to receive payment.
According to them, their continued recognition through government activities, including promotion and conversion exercises, demonstrated that they remained employees of the commission.
They said some affected workers were promoted, while others were converted to the officers’ cadre and assigned statutory positions in various local government councils.
The workers also said some of them were transferred from one local government area to another and deployed to various duty posts despite their outstanding salaries.
They disclosed that several attempts by the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) to resolve the matter, including intervention by its national secretariat, had not yielded the desired result.
The workers listed 11 colleagues whom they said had died amid the hardship associated with the prolonged salary non-payment. They also identified 20 others who had retired without receiving their salaries.
One other worker, Mr Iheboro Anthony of Mbaitoli Local Government Area, was identified as bedridden after suffering a stroke and requiring urgent assistance.
The workers are asking the governor to order the immediate payment of all salary arrears from 2020 to date and establish a task force to ensure compliance with his earlier directive.
They also requested emergency medical assistance for sick workers, compassionate support for families of deceased workers and payment of outstanding benefits to retirees.
The affected employees said they had opted for an appeal rather than a protest because they did not want their actions to be misconstrued.
They urged Governor Uzodimma to personally intervene, saying their continued stay without salaries had become unbearable.
The workers maintained that their demand was simply for the payment of salaries and arrears they said had remained outstanding since 2020, as well as assistance for colleagues and families affected by the prolonged hardship.

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has raised concerns over the circulation of old videos and images showing waste in parts of Mushin, warning that presenting the materials as current could mislead the public about the area’s present waste management situation.

The Authority said Mushin is currently clean, following sustained direct intervention over the past three weeks to address service delays and improve waste collection across the community.

Speaking on the development, LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the Authority had deployed its trucks to inner streets to collect waste directly from households and communities.

He explained that LAWMA had also engaged market and community leaders to improve coordination and ensure that identified gaps in waste collection were addressed promptly.

“Some of the videos being circulated as though they show the current situation in Mushin are old, and presenting them without dates or context is misleading,” Gbadegesin said.

He acknowledged that there had been service delays in some areas but noted that LAWMA had intervened, resulting in a different situation on the ground.

The LAWMA boss urged residents not to dump waste on road medians or other unauthorised locations, advising communities experiencing delays in waste collection to contact the Authority through their Community Development Associations (CDAs) or community leaders for interim direct collection.

Residents who spoke on the intervention also acknowledged improvements in waste evacuation.

Mrs. Taiwo Adenekan, a resident of Dakobiri Street, said LAWMA trucks had been coming into the market to evacuate accumulated waste, making disposal easier for residents and helping to prevent illegal dumping.

Similarly, Chief Samsideen Obawunmi, Babaloja of Irepodun Market, Mushin, said LAWMA’s engagement with market stakeholders had helped draw attention to waste management concerns, while traders were also being encouraged to dispose of refuse properly.

Alhaji Kazeem, General Secretary of Mushin Market, commended the Authority for engaging community representatives and responding to complaints, particularly through direct waste collection from inner streets.

Another resident, Owolabi Akinwande of Moroduke, Mushin, also welcomed the initiative, saying direct collection had made it easier for households to dispose of their waste properly.

LAWMA reiterated its zero tolerance for dumping waste on road medians, urging residents to keep their waste properly packaged and use approved collection channels.

The Authority assured communities experiencing service delays that it would continue to intervene where necessary while working with PSP operators, market leaders, CDAs and other stakeholders to strengthen waste collection in Mushin and other affected areas.

LAWMA also urged residents to disregard outdated materials being presented as current, report genuine service delays through the appropriate channels and support efforts towards maintaining a cleaner Lagos.

The Executive Chairman of Mushin Local Government, Hon. Tunbosun Haruna Aruwe, has intensified efforts to improve environmental cleanliness and promote a healthier, safer and more sustainable environment across the council area.

The latest intervention is focused on major road corridors, particularly Agege Motor Road and the Isolo Road axis, where accumulated refuse is being evacuated as part of the council’s ongoing environmental efforts.

The exercise, being carried out in collaboration with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), is aimed at restoring environmental sanity to the affected areas and improving the overall appearance of the community.

According to the local government administration, the removal of accumulated waste is also important in preventing refuse from obstructing drainage channels, particularly during the rainy season. Blocked drainage systems can contribute to flooding and create unhealthy conditions for residents and other road users.

Aruwe stressed that maintaining a clean environment should not be left to government agencies alone, describing environmental cleanliness as a shared responsibility between the government and residents.

While acknowledging LAWMA’s responsibility for waste evacuation across Lagos State, the chairman urged residents, traders, shop owners and motorists to support the efforts by ensuring that their waste is properly disposed of.

He specifically appealed to residents to desist from dumping refuse on roads, walkways, medians and drainage channels, warning that such practices could undermine government’s efforts to maintain a clean and flood-resilient community.

The chairman said indiscriminate dumping of waste not only affects the physical appearance of the environment but can also create challenges for drainage and sanitation, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.

“Our commitment is to a cleaner and healthier Mushin. We will continue to support every legitimate effort that improves our environment, while appealing to our people to take ownership of the cleanliness of their communities,” Aruwe said.

He further assured residents that the local government would continue to work with relevant state government agencies and other stakeholders to identify environmental challenges and facilitate appropriate interventions in different communities within Mushin.

The administration also called on residents to cooperate with LAWMA officials and environmental personnel during waste evacuation exercises, stressing the importance of making proper waste disposal a daily habit.

The council maintained that sustained cooperation between government agencies and residents would be essential to achieving a cleaner Mushin, improving public spaces and reducing environmental conditions that could contribute to flooding and other sanitation challenges.

Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has reacted to a post by popular social media influencer Tunde Ednut on X over the state of a road in Mushin, Lagos.

Ednut had shared a video on the social media platform showing what appeared to be a road overwhelmed by waste in the Mushin area, prompting a response from the commissioner.

Reacting to the post, Wahab said the video was old and did not reflect the current situation in the area, noting that the location had since been cleared.

Wahab said the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) had continued to sustain its operations in the area as part of efforts to maintain a cleaner and healthier environment.

The commissioner acknowledged that Lagos, like other major cities, faces challenges in waste management. He, however, identified the unwillingness of some residents and property occupiers to pay for Private Sector Participation (PSP) waste collection services as one of the recurring challenges.

According to him, LAWMA and its teams have consistently intervened in areas where waste management challenges arise and remain committed to keeping the environment clean.

Wahab urged content creators and social media users to verify information before publishing, particularly when using photographs or videos to depict the current situation in a particular location.

He said relying on outdated content could give the public a misleading impression of the situation and unnecessarily portray Lagos and Nigeria in a negative light.

The commissioner stressed that constructive criticism remains welcome, but said it would be more effective when based on accurate and verifiable information.
