Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on the government to intensify efforts to secure communities affected by insecurity and ensure the safe and dignified return of displaced Nigerians to their ancestral homes.

Obi made the call after visiting an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, where he met with more than 500 displaced persons.

The visit followed what Obi described as an unfortunate incident in Benue State, where his delegation was prevented from proceeding to Yelwata to visit displaced Nigerians and families affected by recent attacks.

Speaking after his visit to the Plateau IDP camp, Obi described the situation in Mangu as deeply disturbing, saying more than 45,000 people have reportedly been displaced, while over 20 communities have been sacked by terrorists.

He said the displaced residents are Nigerians who want to return to their ancestral homes, rebuild their communities, cultivate their farms and live in peace and dignity.

“As I have always maintained, as long as there is one displaced Nigerian, all Nigerians are displaced,” Obi said.

The NDC presidential candidate urged the government to do more to secure the affected communities and restore the confidence of residents who have been forced to flee their homes.

He stressed that every Nigerian has the right to life, safety, dignity and livelihood, irrespective of where they live, their ethnicity, religion or political affiliation.

Obi also warned against allowing displaced Nigerians to become forgotten citizens, noting that their homes, livelihoods and future have been disrupted by insecurity.

According to him, government must create the necessary conditions for displaced persons to return home safely and with dignity, while also securing their communities and providing support to help them rebuild their lives.

During the visit, Obi offered his modest support to the displaced families as a gesture of solidarity, compassion and shared humanity.
