A chieftain of the Peoples Redemption Party, Yakubu Kingsley, has called for greater transparency in the appointment of public officials, saying competence, integrity and accountability should guide the process.

Kingsley, a former presidential aspirant of the party, made the call in a statement issued on Wednesday, stressing that public appointments should not be driven by ethnicity, religion, political affiliation or personal loyalty.

He, however, said the emphasis on competence should be balanced with fair representation to ensure that no region, community, gender or generation is excluded from participation in governance.

According to him, the Federal Character principle should be applied in a transparent and measurable manner rather than being used only during political arguments over appointments.

Kingsley proposed a framework that would allow Nigerians to assess the geographical and professional representation of people appointed into government positions.

He said such a system could help address recurring disagreements over appointments and provide the public with clearer information about how government positions are distributed.

The PRP chieftain also called for broader consultation in policymaking, urging the government to engage professional bodies, civil society organisations, traditional institutions, academia, labour, the private sector, women and youth groups, people living with disabilities and Nigerians in the diaspora.

He maintained that governance should extend beyond political circles and include people directly affected by government policies.

Kingsley further advocated greater participation for communities where Nigeria’s natural resources are extracted, arguing that such areas should have a stronger stake in development arising from the resources.

He said Nigeria’s ethnic, cultural, religious, professional and regional diversity should be reflected in governance while ensuring that citizens have fair opportunities to contribute to national development.
